The participants from the WIP workshop sat together for the final gathering, Mark Gross and Ellen Do, TEI 2011 conference chairs, toke TOK and began to tell a story with the cards and then all the participants joined in and got involved in telling the story. It was amazing.

The TOK prototype

TOK is a platform for preschool children to create their own stories. The prototype consists of a platform and a set of picture cards drawn on paper with the format of a two pages book.

Figure 1- Physical prototype showing the cards and the screen

The page on the left side is used for placing the cards; it has 15 rectangular marks where the picture cards fit in. The page on the right side has a classmate PC embedded. When the picture cards are placed on the marks they appear on the computer screen like an animation.

Testing the cards with the children: 23/24-11-2010
two groups of 25 preschool children each, all aged five, were involved from the beginning in the design of the platform: informing the design process, testing and using the cards and the prototype.
In following sessions, we tested the cards with the children using a paper  prototype of the platform that consisted of a  simple A4 colored cardboard.

nsights
for the Design of the Interface                                                                                                     The observation that the children placed the cards in rows on the paper platform showed us that the design of the interface with a square grid where the cards are placed fitted children's way of using the cards; given the fact that some children placed the cards on different locations the system identifies every card as well as it location, therefore each card can be placed anywhere on the marks, giving the children the possibility of beginning the story where they want. Also the system reads the cards following the order they have been placed on the marks.
